WALSALL SEES BIG DROP IN ABANDONED VEHICLES

Walsall Council's work in tackling abandoned vehicles means that the number of dumped cars has fallen by more than 20 per cent over the last year, and is predicted to fall again.

The big drop follows a range of initiatives including a Walsall Council 'vehicle amnesty' to encourage people to hand over their scrap cars rather than abandoning them.

West Midlands Arson Task Force, a partnership between the West Midlands fire Service and West Midland Police, has revealed figures fell from 242 in 2004/5 to 190 in 2005/6.

It is projected to go down again to 161 next year, based on the first quarter's figures - less than half the 2003/4 figure of 331.

Walsall Council also removed 100 per cent of vehicles within 24 hours last year.

Councillor Rachel Walker, Cabinet member for environment, said:
"These figures are good news for Walsall people. Apart from being an eye-sore, abandoned vehicles are dangerous and can be a fire hazard, using up valuable time and resources.

"It's great that the figures are going down and Walsall Council will be looking at ways of working with our partners to reduce the figures still further - helping to keep our borough clean and green."

The council has the power - on instruction from police - to remove abandoned vehicles within 24 hours, if they are in a dangerous condition, causing an obstruction or are untaxed.

Walsall Council currently gives 48 hours notice for the majority of vehicles on public land.

Police Sergeant Phil Butler, West Midlands Arson Task Force coordinator, praised Walsall Council's efforts.
He said: "It is simply vital that Walsall's services work together to achieve a safer and prosperous community, and we are so proud of the hard work and commitment shown by all parties to achieve these reductions. Abandoned vehicles act as a magnet for anti social behaviour - these cars are often driven in dangerous condition, by youths, used in crime and then set alight.

"It is vital to understand that the owner has responsibility to dispose of their car correctly. Be part of the solution and not the problem."
